Pacific Islands - Norfolk Island

Anson Bay, Norfolk Island.

Welcome to Norfolk Island.

The unassuming star of the South Pacific, Norfolk packs a lot of attractions into its eight by five kilometres - but there's no rush to enjoy them. Norfolk Island charms visitors with its laidback lifestyle, unspoilt scenery and spine-tingling history.

Sleep in, breakfast late, then take your time and wander among historic ruins to get a grim sense of the island's penal colony past. Bike or walk through stunning rainforest, swim at one of prettiest and safest beaches in the world, taste unique island dishes or bag a tax-free bargain.

And best of all Norfolk is literally on our doorstep, only a two hour flight away. With direct flights twice a week, you've got the chance to brush away the cobwebs. Anniversary, family get together, romantic weekend, reward for a job well done? Norfolk is your perfect destination for that rejuvenating short break.

Located just over 1000 kilometres north-west of Auckland, Norfolk Island is Australian territory, but looks to Pitcairn Island for its heritage. 2006 marks 150 years since descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives settled on Norfolk.

You can see the Pitcairn culture everywhere - in dancing, music, singing, basket weaving and other crafts, in tasty local dishes like muddha (banana dumplings) and mihi pie, made with periwinkles, and in the 'Norfolk' language, a mix of 18th century English and Polynesian still used by some of the islanders.

Some things on the island have changed little over the years - cows still graze under the commonage system and, with no natural harbour, shipped goods are still brought ashore in lighters. But there's no shortage of modern comforts and services, including quality restaurants, first-class sporting facilities and more than 70 tax-free shops, centrally located so you can stroll from one to another - no rush, remember!

Norfolk Island's national park has some of the best remaining rainforest anywhere and you can explore it on foot or bike. Swim in the sparkling, reef-protected waters of Emily Bay or go scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing or sailing.

If fishing's your game, you'll be delighted with catches of tuna, trumpeter, kingfish, snapper and trevally. Then wind in the fishing line and watch the sun set behind a Norfolk Pine while you savour a fish fry in the island's beautiful outdoors.
