The revenue sharing alliance covers flights between New Zealand and mainland USA, including feeder flights within New Zealand and the US, with the airlines working together to promote and sell both carriers’ services.

The revenue share agreement will come into effect when United launches its new San Francisco - Auckland service on 1 July this year. The alliance further strengthens Air New Zealand’s network of strong Pacific Rim revenue share partners which includes Virgin Australia, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Air China.

Air New Zealand currently operates a daily service between Auckland and San Francisco, double daily services between Auckland and Los Angeles, and five services per week between Auckland and Houston, increasing to daily flights during the December/January peak period.

Subject to government approval, United will begin operating a three times weekly Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner service between San Francisco and Auckland in July, moving to daily services operated by larger 787-9 aircraft in November 2016.

The launch of United’s Auckland - San Francisco service will result in increased air capacity and frequency between Auckland and San Francisco, with an approximately 30% increase in frequency initially, as well as new time of day options for travellers.

Because Air New Zealand and United are Star Alliance partners, Air New Zealand's Airpoints members already receive reciprocal frequent flyer benefits including loyalty earning and redemption when travelling on United Airlines' services. Those with Star Gold status also receive frequent flyer benefits such as lounge access and priority handling at the airport.

The two airlines are exploring further ways to enhance the benefits for their respective loyalty customers.
