Brooks Waimārama Sanctuary, where endangered native species flourish in the South Island's largest fenced haven.
Nestled near Nelson,Brook Waimārama Sanctuary offers an immersive journey into a revitalized native ecosystem. As the South Island's largest fenced sanctuary, spanning 690 hectares, it stands as a testament to dedicated conservation efforts. Once a waterworks, this remarkable space now teems with reintroduced endangered wildlife, most notably boasting the largest wild population of the vibrant kākāriki karaka. Visitors can witness the successful return of other native birds like tīeke, kererū, and korimako, filling the air with their unique calls. After a long absence, the ancient tuatara once again roams within a specially protected enclosure, and in a momentous homecoming, little spotted kiwi have recently been reintroduced to the sanctuary after nearly a century. Exploring the sanctuary's 15 kilometers of walking tracks reveals diverse habitats, from regenerating bush and mature beech forest to picturesque waterfalls and streams. Keep an eye out for the fascinating carnivorous land snail, Powelliphanta hochstetteri consobrina, another successful translocation. Beyond its ecological significance, the sanctuary holds historical interest with remnants of Nelson's former waterworks dotting the landscape. It stands as a powerful example of community-driven conservation, offering educational opportunities through its visitor center and programs. Whether you're strolling along the accessible loop track or venturing onto more challenging trails, Brooks Waimarama Sanctuary provides a tranquil and captivating experience, showcasing the beauty and resilience of New Zealand's natural heritage..

What an amazing place this sanctuary is! Clive and the staff at the sanctuary were just really caring and kind. Clive recommended the trails I should walk in in which direction and I couldn’t have thanked him more. When I couldn’t find the tuatara, they showed me exactly where he was. The hiking was really nice, quite a lot of uphill but that also went downhill. I thoroughly recommend anyone to visit this wonderful sanctuary.

Wonderful experience
Went for a trip in early April. Lovely quiet tracks with plenty of Tui and fantails to keep you company and only steps away from Nelson.
