SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS – AKAROA

Watch the video!

Akaroa Harbour is the only place on the planet where you can get close to the world's smallest and rarest dolphin, the Hector's Dolphin!

These magnificent creatures have made their home base in Akaroa, a stunning French inspired sea-side village just a 90 minute scenic drive from Christchurch. The name Akaroa means "long harbour".

Join Black Cat Cruises for an unforgettable journey where you’ll get the once in a lifetime opportunity to swim with these dolphins inside the naturally protected harbour, not out in the open seas.

Black Cat Cruises are a supreme tourism award winning company with an excellent safety track record and a portion of every ticket sold goes towards the conservation of the Hector's dolphin.

We only allow 12 swimmers in the water at one time allowing greater opportunity for one on one interaction with the dolphins.

Success Rate:

  • We have a high success rate for swimming with these dolphins, but they are wild dolphins, so seeing them is a great privilege.
  • The great thing about viewing or swimming with dolphins is that you are doing it in their natural habitat completely on their terms, and so of course we cannot absolutely "guarantee" dolphins on every single trip, and nor can any other operator.
  • Sometimes dolphins may have calves with them, or are feeding, mating or just resting. It's important for us not to interact with dolphins when they don't want to.
  • But you may be interested to know that in the last 12 months we saw dolphins on 98% of our cruises and had successful swims on 81% of our swim trips. So you have to be a bit unlucky to miss out!
  • In the unlikely event you don’t see any dolphins (average 3% of cruises) then we give you a refund of 50%. If the dolphins don’t want to interact with swimmers (average 17% of cruises) then we give you a 25% refund.

    Best day ever!

After a rocky start in which the sales staff informed us (me and a friend) that dolphins hadn’t been seen all day and tried to put us on a viewing rather than swimming tour our afternoon went from ok to epic. Our tour guide Kat kitted us up and allowed us board the vessel Cat2. I was hopeful to see one dolphin but we were lucky enough that lots (at least 6 pods) came to our boat so we got to swim with them! We were told up front the dolphins happiness was most important (rightly so) so they would need to freely come to us if we were to swim. I loved this as ensured the conservation message was upheld. Kat was extremely personable and the rest of the team to- all in all a great day out.

    Life time experience

I've never experienced such curious and playful dolphins! Although the visibility wasn't good under water, the dolphins came close enough to admire them when they passed by. I would like to thank the tour operators for this experience and also for taking great care about the environment and Dolphins.

    AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!!

It was a dream come true for me. From the beginning, when I arrived and dressed with the equipment provided by the Black Cat Crusiers Company (all excellent) go on the boat to find the dolphins and once there try to capture their attention and come to swim. Once in the water, I discovered that we called the experience "swim with dolphins" and actually they are the ones who are going to swim with you. Beautiful, highly recommended, it's best to see the species in their natural environment and interact without affecting their livelihood. I feel like that! :D Important fact: The Hector / Maui dolphin is in serious danger of extinction and part of the money paid to make the experience goes to the cause to help that does not happen. They are also the smallest dolphins in the entire species, even if they look bigger in the water.

    Swimmimg with the dolphins

Didnt get to swim with the dolphins. Got to see them which was good though. But unfortunately didnt get to swim. Got a partial refund but still cost us over 100 dollars each for less than 2 hours on a boat. Just my opinion thats its too expensive when you dont actually get to swim.

    Amazing!

This was an amazing experience! The staff, Alistair and Chris was so helpful. It didn’t take us long to find the dolphins and the whole time we were in the water they were shouting out where the dolphins were. The hot chocolate wnd hot showers were much appreciated!
