Visit the wild West coast as far south as you can comfortably drive. See waterfalls and magnificent pools. Eat West Coast white bait and fish n Chips depending on the season, maybe even catch a fish!
Start your day with an easy pickup from your accommodation or meet in Wanaka, then sit back and enjoy the ride with your friendly, highly experienced driver as the adventure begins.
Your first stop is the iconic Blue Pools, where a gentle bush walk leads you to crystal clear waters perfect for photos. Continue on to explore the dramatic beauty of Wilson Creek Canyon, Fantail Falls, Gates of Haast, and the striking Thunder Falls, each stop offering its own unique wow moment.
When it’s time to refuel, pause for lunch in Haast or head all the way to Jackson Bay for classic fish and chips at what’s often called one of New Zealand’s most scenic seaside spots. For those feeling adventurous, there’s also the option to add a thrilling jet boat ride along a West Coast river, weather permitting.
Round out the day with a relaxed stroll along a wild riverbed or beach, keeping an eye out for greenstone, known as Pounamu in Māori culture. Then sit back and enjoy the journey home, arriving in Wanaka in time for dinner after a day packed with unforgettable sights and experiences.

Day Trip to Haast and Jackson Bay
Thanks to Doug for a great day out, despite the typical wet West Coast weather. Doug told us info and history specific to the West Coast but also about NZ in general. We explored Haast, Jackson Bay and places in between. The weather lifted on our return trip and we were treated to sunshine and snowy peaks. I would strongly recommend you carry sandfly repellent if you search for greenstone or take up a fishing option. Definitely stop at The Cray Pot in Jackson Bay for lunch - delicious whitebait and fish n chips, intriguing cafe in an old train carriage, and great views from the shores of Jackson Bay. I loved reading the history boards and understanding the challenges of isolation both in 1850s and today. We did the Ellery Lake walk (leisurely hour and a half return). As Aussie visitors, we found the local flora and fauna so varied, lake is a nice end viewpoint and it’s an easy walk for all. Thanks Doug for a unique insight into the West Coast.
