Wairakei is highly valued by Maori's who settled here over a 1,000 years ago and enjoyed the waters therapeutic and healing powers.
Marvel at the intricate Maori carvings during your walk through the terraces which depict the history of the local tribe Ngati Tuwharetoa.
You'll be in awe of the geysers that blast the waters up from depths of 1.5km reaching pressures of 250 thousand pounds per square inch.
The vivid blue pools cascade beautifully over the terraces, carrying the silica which helped form these amazing natural platforms.

Was very well set up and quite informative
We are Australians, so we know very little of the Māori families, their beliefs and how they lived. The walk explained, in very simple language, how some groups lived and their beliefs and customs - not super scientific - just enough to give us a very basic understanding. Specially loved the brief explanations of some of the Māori living stories.

Disappointed
The massage was 45 min, not 60. (Paid for 60 min). Left on table with a wet blanket for the first 8 min. The massage was light touching and disappointing. She pulled and knotted my hair because a few strands fell on my back. No one asked how our massage was. My person was outside smoking, instead of checking us out. Couples massage $230, paid in advance.

Overpriced for what it is
We were disappointed with this attraction. When compared to other similar geothermal experiences this is probably at the bottom of our list.
