Waitangi Treaty Grounds welcomes you on a journey of discovery through Aotearoa New Zealand’s most important historic site, where in 1840 New Zealand’s founding document was signed: the Treaty of Waitangi.

Features of Waitangi Treaty Grounds include Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi, the Treaty House, the carved Meeting House, a carving studio and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe.

Te Rau Aroha was opened in 2020 and commemorates the service and sacrifice of Māori in the NZ Armed Forces, sharing stories of heroism, loss and restoration from the world wars and subsequent conflicts.

Visitors to Waitangi Treaty Grounds may purchase a Day Pass which includes a guided tour (50 minutes), a Māori cultural performance (30 minutes), entry to the two museums, the Treaty House, the carved Meeting House, and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe.

A 'must visit' when in Northland

The guided tour and cultural show provide a really good introduction and overview of Maori life and culture. The exhibition was good too. Many interesting artifacts. Once the new exhibition hall (as yet unnamed) is open it will provide an even broader experience.

Great experience!

It was a full day of great experience and learning about New Zealand culture and heritage! Great concert from the local Maori group. The largest war canoe built by the Maori is fascinating and a real piece of art too. All museums were great and very informative. Great and knowledgeable guides too. Highly recommend it to everyone!

Fantastic

The Museum’s static displays are very informative and are well put together - a credit to the volunteers who o his n. Shoe string budget. Th NZ government shoul be more supportive it’s finding. The tour guide was very entertaining and knowledgeable. The cultural performance was excellent and very professional. A great day out for all visitors to obtain a short history lesson on New Zealand - with enough detail to keep it real and interesting

Good day out

The tour was informative & the cultural performance was good. My toddlers actually sat through it which was a bonus. Museum was excellent and I would have spent hours there if I didn’t have little kids in tow. The staff couldn’t find my booking but sorted it out with no dramas and one of the ladies was really helpful when we were a few minutes late for the tour. They’ve definitely poured some $$ into this place.
