Mou Waho Island Water Taxi - Wanaka Water Taxis

Escape the crowds and discover the magic of Mou Waho Island.

Highlights

  • Spend 1.5 hours exploring the stunning Mou Waho Island
  • Hike up to a hidden lake
  • Relax on secluded beaches

Where you can find an island, on a lake, on an island, on a lake, on an island on the sea!

Mou Waho Island is a protected nature reserve and is home to many native New Zealand birds including the curious and flightless Weka.

A short walk takes you to the top of the island where you will be exposed to breathtaking panoramic views of the Arethusa pool, Lake Wanaka and its surrounding peaks.

Our water taxi leaves Wanaka Marina twice-daily travelling 15km up Lake Wanaka, passing Mou Tapu Island and the steep cliff of fisherman's cove to Mou Waho Island.

Your friendly and knowledgeable skipper will inform you of the fascinating geology of the alps and the glaciers that created the lake as you travel along its sparkling waters.

Enjoy 1.5 hours exploring the Island and hiking to the hidden lake.

Unforgettable Trip to Mou Waho Island

I thoroughly recommend a half day trip if you're in Wanaka.....Wanaka Water Taxi do a trip across the lake to the remarkable Mou Waho Island which sits in the lake. A good walk to the top of the island through lovely bush will bring you out to a hidden gem - a lake. So a lake on an island in a lake on an island! Not only that but it is home to the Buff Weka - a flightless bird which is extinct on the mainland. We saw 5 of them and they are extremely friendly! The owners are a wonderful young husband and wife team, are informative on the way over, stopping to show you the other two islands in the lake including Ruby Island. It has been one of the highlights in 2020. A remarkable adventure! Krystle was so wonderful and masterful behind the wheel of their boat, stopping to answer our questions en route and bringing a happy vibe to the trip. We had the trip and the island entirely to ourselves - 3 of us, so could take it at our own pace and enjoy it. Very special climbing to the top to see the lake and lying out flat on the rocks in total quietness and contemplation under the big sky. This is something we won't forget.

An amazing place!

The water taxi provided a reasonably priced alternative to expensive tours. Our captain provided information on the geology, biology, and social history of the area. I strongly recommend this!
