A good walk to the top of the island through lovely bush will bring you out to a hidden gem - a lake. So a lake on an island in a lake on an island! Not only that but it is home to the Buff Weka - a flightless bird which is extinct on the mainland. We saw 5 of them and they are extremely friendly! The owners are a wonderful young husband and wife team, are informative on the way over, stopping to show you the other two islands in the lake including Ruby Island. It has been one of the highlights in 2020. A remarkable adventure! Krystle was so wonderful and masterful behind the wheel of their boat, stopping to answer our questions en route and bringing a happy vibe to the trip. We had the trip and the island entirely to ourselves - 3 of us, so could take it at our own pace and enjoy it. Very special climbing to the top to see the lake and lying out flat on the rocks in total quietness and contemplation under the big sky. This is something we won't forget.
