An experience of a lifetime

I took the Footwhistle Glowworm Cave tour with my husband and 3 children. The youngest with us was 11 and the tour was suited to all our capabilities. Colleen was incredibly knowledgeable and approachable and it was a humbling and spiritual experience for us all. From the stalactites and several million year old fossils to the beautiful glowworms, there was something of wonder for us all. This was an experience and memory of a lifetime and we are so grateful we got to experience it the way we did.

Wonderful walk through a cave

Our guide Colleen was very passionate about the caves and the glow worms. The information was fantastic. She was very considerate about the protection of the glow worms but she shown her torch to enable some fantastic pictures. Colleen was fantastic as was the day. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a more intimate day seeing glow worms rather than the busy tourist boat through the caves. It was an easy walk. We also had a lovely cup of tea and seen some fossils on the way out.

A Different Insight to The World of Glowworms

I was initially disappointed, as I hadn't realised that this was not the regular Glowworm tour on the boat, up at the main caves. However, it soon turned arouns, as we embarked on our small, almost private tour (only 6-8 people attending, plus the guide) We headed out to a privately owned cave. Walking through some woodland & through a Tea-house, which we visit after the tour, we descended a number of steps (you need to be fairly agile - there were a couple of us who struggled with the steps on the way back up). The guide was excellent & certainly knew her stuff. She was very informative & we saw some great cave features, including underground streams & of course glowworms. Heading back, we stopped in the Tea-house & were privelaged to taste Kawakawa tea, which was lovely. A nice change to the hoards of tourists on the usual crammed boat trip

Glowworm Experience

We were lucky to be the only ones on our scheduled tour. Colleen was amazing. She was knowledgeable, friendly and funny. A must see when in NZ.

What an amazing tour. We were picked up by Ross who gave us a wonderfully intimate tour of their caves. An up close experience of these amazing insects. Tea in the bush to end with. Thoroughly recommend this tour. Not commercialised AND you can take photos!
