Explore the raw beauty of the world's youngest geothermal site on a self-guided, ecology-focused adventure among the craters of the spectacular Waimangu Volcanic Valley.
Arrived in the pouring rain and set out determined not to let that stop me, the walk was pretty flat but the views were stunning regardless of the weather! I loved that they had different bus stops with amenities so you could head back to the start at any of those points, but the whole walk is well worth it! Only saw one other person the entire walk, felt like I had the place to myself! An absolute must for anyone wanting to see cool geothermal activity in a beautiful setting’
It’s stunning and smelly. Great scenery on an easy walk and the hard part (getting back uphill) does the shuttle bus for you.
It is a nice hike down hill that is gradual but the geothermic activity isn’t spectacular and the higher difficult walk was closed when we walked down the valley.
Great landscapes, varied vulcanic elements.

A stunning walk
We thoroughly enjoyed Waimangu Volcanic Valley. So many different sights to enjoy on the walk - a wide array of geothermal colours, pools, rivers and lakes. It’s a very relaxing place to visit. The walk was easy, mostly downhill. The café was lovely too, well-priced, with great service.
