Robert said... We were lucky with picking a perfect day with clear skies and little wind, and we ended up being only the two of us - a presonalised tour! Rocky, our great young guide, gave us a a good introduction on what to expect, and provided all the information on the geographic, cultural and historic features. Detailed enough, and he could answer all our questions. The trip takes you up a bumpy track close to one of the three sumits of Tarawera, and then it is quite an easy hike to the top, down the scoria slope into the largest crater, and back up to the starting point. You get breathtaking panoramic views all the way to White island, down to the Ruhapehu massif, over to the Ureweras and Waikato on the other side. Only from up here, you get to appreciate how many lakes there are dotted around Rotorua. If you haven't been up Mount Tarawera, you haven't seen it all.
