Franz Josef Wilderness Tours is one of the most scenic kayak locations on planet earth

Highlights

  • One of the most scenic kayaking tours in the world!
  • Unbeatable views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers
  • Tranquil mirror-like waters - great for paddling

Franz Josef Wilderness Tours is one of the most scenic kayak locations on planet earth!.

Enjoy a 3 hour kayaking tour in Franz Josef Glacier.

Join us on a unique kayak adventure and kiwi sanctuary tour, just minutes from Franz Josef Glacier!

Glide effortlessly across the lakes mirror-like water, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding high mountains and glaciers. Our stunning lake was created by the mighty Franz Josef Glacier as it retreated some 14,000 years ago.

Now it sits calm and reflective, sandwiched between the mountains and the sea. At the back of the lake, we navigate our kayaks deep into the heart of the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary.

Paddle silently past some 900-year-old kahikatea trees, all to the sound of native birdsong.

Franz Josef Wilderness Tours is locally owned and operated, so like true west coasters, we'll get out there rain or shine!

Amazing Experience

Brilliant guide and amazing experience. Totally recommend this to anyone wanting to enjoy nature from a lake perspective Location is breath taking, both on the lake and down the little side creek. Will be looking at doing other adventures with these guys next time I'm back in Franz

Great trip

We booked the classic kayak tour but unfortunately, this was fully booked for the time and date of it. However, the company upgraded us to the kayak tour with the okarito kiwi sanctuary and it was brilliant. The tour guide Jacob was so friendly and knowledgeable. Great tour!

Fantastic experience

The whole family enjoyed the 3 hour classic kayaking experience. The scenary was beautiful and it was the first time we kayak in a black water lake. Cool! Our guide was friendly and took many beautiful photos for us. Thank you! Highly recommended tour.

Amazing experience

Couldn't say anything bad, fantastic experience, instructor was outstanding, beautiful scenery and reasonably easy for 2 pretty unfit people! Love to do it again sometime.

super stunning

Without a doubt, having a clear, calm morning made for a super stunning experience. The lake was a like a mill pond, nary a zephyr to ripple the mirror like surface which clearly reflected back the surrounding bush, hills and snow sprinkled mountains - it really was like in the picture! Our group easily paddled across the lake to Echo Bay - with a fund display of how the place was named - and up a bush fringed creek as far as practical. As all aside from the two guides were in double kayaks, consideration needed to be given for space to manoeuvre the lengthy craft around, to get back down. While not absolutely necessary, having some previous kayaking experience helps, and doing the tour with someone you've also kayaked with before is a bonus - it pays to be in sync to make headway, successfully. Our guides were out-going, helpful for those who were not so experienced and provided good info about the lake, flora and fauna - especially in regards to the Rowi Kiwi concersation programme. They took heaps of great pix of the group, individual shots and as well collectively paddled across the waters. So you do come away with a good selection to show others, to go with your own happy memories of the experience.
