Taonga Teen Parent Unit's journey to Wellington
Travelling to a different city is a rare experience for students at Taonga Teen Parent Unit as much of their time and income is spent on everyday needs to take care of their children. Two of the students in the group had never flown on an airplane before and most had never been to Wellington, so the trip meant a great deal to the young students. Experiencing the joy of flying and travelling to the country's capital city was an exciting prospect for the group.
The young mothers were inspired by the cabin crew on their flight to Wellington who went out of their way to make their trip enjoyable by announcing them over the loud speaker and allowing them to hand out lollies to other passengers. The girls chatted to Air New Zealand staff about their cabin crew training, some even deciding they want to become flight attendants like the wonderful staff they met.
In Wellington, the students enjoyed riding the cable car, visiting the Beehive and Parliament buildings as well as exploring Te Papa Museum to learn more about New Zealand and its history. The students also loved watching street performers in Cuba Street and ended their day watching the sunset from Mount Victoria.
The trip to Wellington proved to be a great bonding experience for the pupils and their teachers, and the group has returned to Auckland inspired and appreciative for all they learnt and experienced on their journey. Learning outside the classroom helped to engage the students and has motivated them to thrive and to fulfil their future aspirations.
