8 March 2017

Sir Jonathon is Founder and Director of not-for-profit Forum for the Future which works with businesses and other organisations to accelerate sustainable change and also heads up Air New Zealand's Sustainability Advisory Panel. He will be in Gisborne this weekend along with the rest of the airline’s panel of seven experts including Te Hā Trust Trustee and Gisborne local Dame Anne Salmond.

Air New Zealand Head of Sustainability Lisa Daniell says the airline has been collaborating with Activate Tairāwhiti to develop and market the East Coast's tourism proposition and consider how tourism growth can benefit regional New Zealand and has brought the panel to Gisborne to further explore that.

"Sustainable tourism is a significant focus for us at Air New Zealand under our sustainability programme and we’re looking forward to bringing our panel of experts to Gisborne, a region we have been working closely with on its tourism proposition. We will be updating the panel on the work we have been doing to date with Activate Tairāwhiti and getting their perspectives on plans moving forward," says Ms Daniell.

Just last week, the airline and Activate Tairāwhiti signed a memorandum of understanding which will see both organisations continue to work closely together to boost Gisborne's tourism industry and grow visitor numbers to the region.

While in Gisborne, Air New Zealand's Sustainability Advisory Panel will also meet with a local iwi and enjoy Māori tourism experiences in order to learn more about regional tourism opportunities in Tairāwhiti - Gisborne and ensure sustainable outcomes are part of any future plans.

The panel comprises a number of New Zealand and international experts with specialist knowledge. They are:

  • Sir Jonathon Porritt, Co-Founder and Director, Forum for the Future (United Kingdom)
  • Dame Anne Salmond, New Zealand anthropologist, writer and distinguished professor of Maori Studies, University of Auckland (New Zealand)
  • Sir Rob Fenwick CNZM, entrepreneur, business person and conservationist, Chair of Predator Free NZ and The Kiwi Trust (New Zealand)

  • Derek Handley, social entrepreneur, Founder of Aera Foundation (New Zealand)
  • Suzanne Hunt, Founder and President, HuntGreen LLC and biofuels expert (United States)
