Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum tells the story of New Zealand, its place in the Pacific and its people. The Museum is home to millions of objects, is a war memorial for the province of Auckland and holds one of New Zealand’s top three heritage libraries.

With a renowned Māori and Pacific collection, significant natural history resources and major pictorial and military history collections, it holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Aucklanders. The Museum building is one of Auckland’s iconic landmarks and offers unrivalled views of Tāmaki Makaurau.

This tour started almost 100 years ago!! With almost a century of history woven into the floors and walls of Auckland’s best-loved building, there are secrets and surprises around every corner.

Take a closer look at the Museum from a whole new perspective. Hear stories of the architects, see what’s inside the wall cavities and take a close look at how Auckland Museum has changed over the years.

See how the Museum looked 90 years ago, see how structural aspects of the building have been preserved and at the end of the tour, get to see the early plans and photos of the Museum. These aren’t usually accessible to the public.

Location

  • Please meet your tour guide in the Grand Foyer of the Museum under the Guided Tours banner, outside the Pacific Lifeways gallery, at 12.55PM.

Restrictions

  • Tripods and bags with dimensions greater than 40cm (L) x 15cm (W) x 35cm (H) are prohibited in the galleries and must be checked into our eLockers (charge applies)..

Notes

  • Maximum 10 people per tour. Suitable for those aged 8+.

    Time: Tours commence daily at 1pm sharp.
