Bookme ReviewReef Daytripper - Great Barrier Reef Small Group Sail and Snorkel Day TripPosted by elkabong from Australia on 24 Mar 2024

  • elkabong said... If you just like travelling on the water then this is the choice for you…if you just want to get out to the reef, get snorkelling and then back on land and get in with other things, maybe not. The craft is for most, painfully slow in reaching its assigned sections of the reef. About 2 1/2 or 3 hours depending on wind and currents etc. The catamaran is largish and there is room to move about. The charter will only take a small group of up to 20-25 people which is why as a a couple we selected it. There were 16 passengers, 14 of whom I’m guessing were under 25 years of age. The food offerings are basic. Some meat serves with cold salads and there is an afternoon light snack on the way back in. The three male crew members we had were friendly and casual except when it came to hygiene and safety. As one said, ‘You don’t listen to the safety instructions, you don’t go into the water. Pay attention.’ They were also strict with food handling and cleaning up afterwards. Alcohol was available but once you had a drink you weren’t allowed back into the water. When asked if I had any medical conditions I advised the crew members I was asthmatic. They gave me a yellow T- shirt so they could keep an extra eye on me as with another passenger. They also supplied a pool noodle floatation device which, even I as a strong swimmer optioned for as they allow you to float comfortably and rest on the surface. You could also have a floatation vest as well, but they tend to create drag in the water but are excellent for not-so-strong swimmers. During stinger season you have to wear a stinger suit which is basically a clingy wetsuit type affair. My partner who is not a water person, enjoyed herself and that’s saying something. The reef sections we saw were amazing and overall it was a very pleasant and safe day out on the reef. We enjoyed ourselves and we are both 60years+ people.
