Welcome to Stardome, the coolest little observatory this side of Neptune.

Stardome has been sharing its love and mātauranga of all things space since 1967. Located in Maungakiekie One Tree Hill, Auckland, it offers fully immersive indoor planetarium shows, year-round Māori astronomy shows, telescope viewing, music and laser events plus hands-on exhibits.

The vibrant and hands-on public galleries give visitors a chance to connect with the latest observations in science and astronomy. Stardome is welcoming for all ages and in all weathers. Come and reconnect with the cosmos!

Our Sky Tonight | Aimed at ages 10+ | 50 minutes

Discover the wonders above with Our Sky Tonight, the flagship live planetarium experience. Guided by an expert astronomer, you’ll explore the stars, constellations, and stories currently visible in the night sky over Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and beyond. Sit back in the immersive digital theater for a real-time tour of the cosmos, tailored to the specific night of your visit. For younger stargazers (under 10), we recommend the family-friendly show, Looking Up.


Ngā Whetū o Takurua (The Stars of Winter) | Aimed at ages 10+ | 50 minutes

Experience Ngā Whetū o Takurua (The Stars of Winter), an interactive planetarium show exploring the night sky from a Māori perspective. Learn how the maramataka (lunar calendar) and Matariki connect the skies to the land and ocean. This journey blends traditional pūrākau (stories) with practical astronomy, taking you from ancient times to the edge of the universe.


Looking Up! | Aimed at ages 5+ | 50 minutes

Who says you have to stay up late to see the stars? Bring your little astronomers for an indoor, daytime tour of Auckland's night sky! You’ll explore the exact planets, stars, and constellations shining above us tonight—all before bedtime. This is a kid-friendly version of the popular Our Sky Tonight show.


The Psychedelic Mixtape | Aimed at all ages | 45 minutes

The Psychedelic Mixtape: A Mind-Altering Audiovisual Journey. Direct from LA to Auckland, immerse yourself in a kaleidoscopic world of light, color, and sound. Featuring the music of Radiohead, David Bowie, George Harrison, and The Flaming Lips. Created by artist and DJ Chris Holmes.


Perfect Little Planet | Aimed at all ages | 30 minutes

Greetings Earthlings! Take a trip through the cosmos with Perfect Little Planet. Follow a family of space travelers from another star system as they scout our solar system for the perfect holiday destination.

  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for shows. Late entry into the planetarium is not possible once the show has started.

    Stardome is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible. The planetarium includes space for 2-3 wheelchairs. Please contact us at time of booking if you require wheelchair space.

Looking Up

As an adult, this presentation was somewhat interesting but this session was purchased because I thought my 5yo nephew would enjoy it. It was momentarily fascinating but quickly lost his attention as the narration was too factual and focus not 'kid-friendly' enough. We ended up leaving a little early.

Great, but...

We have mixed feelings about our Stardome visit. Great welcome & facilities, and the planetarium show itself was awesome, with an excellent presenter & style - our visit was marred by the young children in the theatre. There were young children, talking, playing & misbehaving throughout the show, which totally distracted. I think the Stardome should have Adults-only shows, or not allow young children. My other feedback would be that the text on the displays is far too small to read, even with glasses, in the darkened environment.
