In New Zealands Southern most corner, Catlins Kayak and Adventure offer sea kayak tours of Nugget Point. We are owner/operated and want to share the wonder that the Catlins have to offer. We currently offer two daily tours, giving people a different viewing point of the Nuggets sheltered northern coastline and Nugget Point lighthouse. The tours offer not only spectacular scenery but a close encounter with the wildlife that inhabits the area.

Nugget Point Wildlife Reserve is breathtaking, its’ distinctive scenery plays host to the regions largest Fur Seal Colony, New Zealand Sea Lion, and casual visits from Hectors Dolphin, Elephant Seal and Orca. It boasts many sea birds that nest above the reaching hands of the southern ocean, including Royal Spoonbills, clouds of mutton birds, the stoic Albatross and the Southern Giant Petrel - all something to keep an eye out for.

Up until recently the Catlins was our best kept secret – we want to share it with you! Offering two morning tours, our Early Riser and Lighthouse.

On our tour we head out along the cliff edge, counting up the seals and spotting sea birds as they whizz in and out to sea. Sitting in the “fish bowl” we can watch the constant activity of the colony whilst we look up at all the envious visitors standing on the platform high above at the Nugget Point Lighthouse.

Do I have to be fit or have kayak abilities? This is a leisurely tour. While the ability to swimming is required, our kayaks used are highly stable and suitable for first time paddlers. We use double kayaks so the work load is halved! You do not have to be of a high fitness level take part in the tour.

The day we went is kind of cloudy. But the couch provide plenty of information and also take care of use very much. We kayak through the nugget point which is the experience that hard to have if you didnt kayak here. Overall, its a very nice tour and all the equipments been provided well. Nothing to worry!

Great value experience

We had heaps of fun sea kayaking. The area is lovely and the kayak was new and easy to use. We spent two hours out out on the water and saw seals and sea birds relaxing on large rock formations out at sea. Our guide was knowledgable about the local area and the trip was both structures and relaxed. He also look some pictures for ya which was very kind.

Beautiful sea kayaking

We had a wonderful trip eventhough it was a bit windy. Jared was a really nice guide. He made us feel secure and took good care of us, always checking the wind, explaining where we are going, how we would have to approach the waves etc. He made us feel very safe. It was spectacular experiencing the sea in different ways in the two hour tour. Once it was stormy with waves then in between the Nuggets it was really calm and we could observe the seal pups having fun in the tide pools. A really great experience! Thank you Jared!

Excellent kayaking trip

Excellent morning with Jared - kayaked along the coast and saw lots of seals and Albatross! Safety was a priority. Would recommend this to anyone passing through the area :)

Trip Of A Lifetime

Paddling around The Nuggets was great. Seeing rare New Zealand fur seals (especially the pups) up close was amazing. But the albatross gliding a metre above our heads was mind blowing!!! Definitely the highlight of our New Zealand holiday. We were really impressed with the way Jared managed the paddle. Safety was his number 1 priority. His knowledge of the local environment and local history impressed us too. All the gear is new and the kayaks, were super stable. Highly recommend trip, I just wish we'd had a waterproof camera to capture the moment.
