Dolphins and Seal Swim Cruise - Sorrento - Moonraker Charters

Experience the adventure of a lifetime on an exciting 3 hour Dolphin and Seal Swim Cruise on the sheltered shallow waters of Port Phillip Bay...

Our cruises commence with a welcome tea or coffee, after which we travel out into the sheltered shallows of Port Phillip Bay to embark on an exciting once in a lifetime adventure!

We arrive at Chinaman's Hat where you can put your newfound skills into action! This is a local spot where the ever-curious Australian Fur Seals are waiting to share their underwater world with you. Chinaman’s Hat is a man-made structure built just for the Seals! Offering shallow water snorkeling and a beautiful white sand seabed, this area has a maximum depth of 4 meters.

Once the dolphins are located we get into groups of 10 people and prepare to enter the water. As you float on the surface of the water your guide will try to entice the dolphins to spend time with the group so they can swim beneath you, after which they often circle swimmers, showing off their amazing abilities. Every swim is unique and the time we spend with the dolphins varies. It must be appreciated that they are completely wild and the interactions are on the animals’ terms.

Our cruises also include a snorkel with the Sea Dragons. These prehistoric looking seahorses are Victoria’s Marine emblem and are unique to our area, being closely related to the famous leafy sea dragons.

Without a doubt, you will enjoy an experience that is truly a breathtaking adventure - and one you will never forget!

Best day of my holidays!

Fantastic! Loved everything. The weather, sea conditions and wildlife all were perfect. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who can swim.?

Magic!

The weather wasn't with us (-bit cloudy, not warm-) but still we got to see and swim with Dolphins and seals even met a Ray (no idea which one). The seals were little annoying as they were purchasing the Dolphin and nibbling their tail! Because of this some of us went into the waste 4 or 5 times, the team REALLY did their best to make it happen. Thank you guys! The team of the moonraker was fantastic... Really nice and open don't be like me who was scared to ask questions the first 2 hours... They will answer all of your questions and there are no stupid ones! We also met Sea dragons! I have a couple videos on my social médias if you are curious (mawimawiwi).. I can't share them here though :(

Bucket List Item Ticked

Still buzzing from yesterday (Sunday 20/02/22 8:30am session). Was a 5am start for us from home, but glad because there was heaps of parking ($5 for half day. Can get ticket from office if having trouble with PayStay app). I'm sure there was free all day parking around if you looked too. The crew were awsome and really wanna help you experience the best with the dolphins. After getting an incredible first run, we had to chase them around to find them again for a bit. Don't worry, you'll get multiple chances and the crew won't move on until ppl are satisfied. Also they have a guarantee so you can come back if you don't see any dolphins. We saw them while waiting on the pier. Seals were more chill experience, although current was a bit strong for me, but I'm not a great swimmer. They have heaps of floatation devices though. I thought the early morning was gonna be freezing, so I wore heaps of thermals underneath. I'd never wore a wetsuit before so didn't know how they worked i.e. once the cold water enters the suit, your body heats that water, and it doesn't escape. My only take away for next time is to make sure I space myself out in the water, but that could have been my group (or me really). Ppl kept bumping into me. Spose it is pretty disorientating not only being in the water but looking out for the animals, having your head out of water to hear their directions, but having it underwater to see. Can't wait for next time, already pumped!!! 2 toliets and Cafe on board (toastie $9 each). P.S. If you've never used a snorkel before, and are a worrier like me, you can buy a cheap one and use it in a pool to get a feel for it. I'm sure there a videos online for tips. Having your own that you are used to already could help you be more comfortable in the water to get the best experience.

Average experience

We did get to see seals and dolphins and the crew do make every attempt to try and get you swimming with the dolphins so I’ll give them a tick there. But the wetsuits are in dire need of an upgrade. I was given one much too big for myself and even going back and asking if it was okay, I was told it was fine (the girl really didn’t care). The wetsuit had started pilling massively in the crotch area so there was pretty much a hole, which was not ideal in the freezing waters. There were far too many people booked on the tour. The boat was crammed and there just wasn’t enough space. This also led to a lot of waiting around for your turn to get a chance to swim with the dolphins, as they only allow ten people at a time. The coffee, tea and hot chocolate is unlimited but get in there before some kid puts four spoons full of chocolate into his drink and takes it all. There are no showers or change rooms on the boat as stated on here, you’ll be getting changed on the pier so be ready for that. With the bookme discount plus the 25% Vic Gov cash back I got this for $75pp. I definitely wouldn’t pay $185 for it which is the full price booking direct with Moonraker and would be extremely disappointed with the tour if I had. For 75 bucks, then yeah whatever not bad.

Bad comms

The tour itself was ok but the communication was a disaster. Got a confirmation sms and email at the same time as other comms to say the tour would be moved to the day prior. When I reached out I couldn’t get in touch with anyone, I tried multiple phone numbers. On good luck we showed up on the booked day and time, then the boat was 30min late.
