It's a bit boho, it's a bit historic, it's bit romantic and it's more than a bit colourful. San Francisco is so many things all at once, which is why it makes an amazing holiday destination. Plus it's on the doorstep of Northern California - Napa Valley, Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe and Santa Cruz are all potential add-ons to your remarkable 'Frisco adventure.
Things to do in San Francisco
A guy called Joe Flower said, "Money lives in New York, power sits in Washington, freedom sips cappuccino in a sidewalk café in San Francisco." In this city you can follow your passions and chase experiences that you'll find nowhere else. Become an urban hiker or explore the waterfront by kayak, bike over the Golden Gate Bridge or count sea lions at Pier 39. San Francisco's a metropolis packed with surprises.
The flowers-in-your-hair vibe that was planted in the late 1960s is still flourishing.
The Summer of Love was in 1967, and 50 years later San Francisco is doing it again. Museums and galleries will be showcasing the art, photography, posters and fashion of the flower child era. There will be festivals, music and dance performances that celebrate the Beat Generation. You could even take a ‘love tour' in an authentic VW hippie bus. Summer of Love events run throughout the year, so put a flower in your hair and be there.
Another signature 2017 event is the 39th Anniversary of Pier 39. This famous waterfront restaurant and entertainment hub will be kicking up its heels with a different celebration every Friday, right until the end of October.
San Francisco has one of the most exciting food and wine scenes in the USA. Fresh ingredients grow year-round in the counties surrounding the city, wine flows in from the 400+ wineries to the north and recipe inspiration comes from the super-diversity of cultures that have made San Fran home. Soft garlic pretzels with French onion soup, ice cream with snickernoodle pieces, shrimp and grits, grilled albondigas (meatballs), salumi misti, yakitori, cioppino… You name it, San Francisco serves it.
