Flights to Sunshine Coast
While coastal fun and sunshine will draw you here, the beautiful hinterland will have you lingering longer.
Just a few movie-filled hours from Auckland, the Sunshine Coast knows how to deliver wave after wave of holiday happiness. Coastal living and sunshine might be your top priorities, however food experiences and the glorious hinterland will make you want to stretch your stay. The total effect is glorious relaxation with just the right amount of added interest.
Things to do in Sunshine Coast
You can fly non-stop to Maroochydore from 7 July to 29 October and land right in the heart of Sunshine Coast. At other times of the year you can fly to Brisbane then drive north on smooth-flowing highways. By road it's just over an hour from Brisbane Airport to Caloundra and around 90 minutes to Noosa Heads.
From a base on the coast it's easy to nip into the hinterland, which includes Beerwah (home of Australia Zoo), the extraordinary heritage-listed Glass House Mountains and the quaint hinterland hamlets of Maleny, Montville, Mapleton, and Eumundi. Unless you want to flop in one spot, you'll definitely want a car for exploration
From wherever you are on Sunshine Coast, it's easy to take a day off to explore the magnificent rocky outcrops that are the Glass House Mountains.
Beach culture at Sunshine Coast is meshed with top-notch food experiences. This means picking up a perfectly-formed espresso while you check out the waves first thing, dusting off the sand to move from beach to restaurant at lunchtime, then sauntering into town at sunset for cocktails and sublime seafood. It also means getting up early to visit the local farmers' market, so that you can stock your holiday fridge with glorious fruit, olives, cheese and artisan breads. The Sunshine Coast strawberry season runs from June to November, so fresh berries are a delectable holiday bonus.
From wherever you are on Sunshine Coast, it's easy to take a day off to explore the magnificent rocky outcrops that are the Glass House Mountains. The crazy shapes of these heritage-listed ancient volcanic extrusions are matched by equally interesting names - Tibrogargan, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Coochin, and Tibberoowuccum, just to mention a few. For breakfast or lunch with a blockbuster view of Mount Coonowrin, there's a great café on the Glass House-Woodford Road.
Sunshine Coast's famously lovely weather has made the area a magnet for sporting events and outdoor attractions. July brings the Velothon and Queensland Garden Expo, the Gympie Music Muster is on in August and Caloundra's Music Festival happens at the end of September. October is time for Wanderlust, a four-day celebration of mindful living, while November is the month for Noosa's annual triathlon and PGA golf. At any time of the year, Australia Zoo is ready to keep you entertained with up-close animal encounters.
