Vancouver delivers urban sophistication, gastronomical decadence, local wines and refreshing outdoor activities, all wrapped up in a picture-perfect parcel. This is the city where locals boast that they can leave their office and be cutting z-shapes down a mountain through pristine white powder snow within the hour. Grouse, Cypress, Mt Seymour - these are names that deservedly send shivers down the spine of snow sport lovers.
Things to do in Vancouver
Visit Vancouver in winter and you'll be surrounded by snow-blanketed mountains just begging to be appreciated on skis, snow shoes or from the warmth and comfort of a mountain-top chalet with a glass of mulled wine in hand. The local ski areas - Cypress, Grouse and Seymour - are all within a 30-minute drive from downtown. Just 90 minutes north, Whistler Blackcomb has a global reputation for snow satisfaction.
At other times of the year, Vancouver is an adventure paradise for hiking, biking, catching live music gigs and doing yoga in the park. And it's always a good spot for a beer. The local craft brewing culture is growing exponentially, so hop to it.
To ensure a great night's sleep for everyone, take the family on a frisky stroll along Vancouver's famous seawall walk.
Vancouver also offers exceptional dining options, friendly farmers' markets, uber-cool cocktail bars and stimulating cultural options, including the world-renowned Museum of Anthropology and a whole raft of theatre and dance companies. To really get a feel for the local culture, mix it up with the fashionistas and bohemian types in the hipster neighbourhoods of Kitsilano, Mt Pleasant and Gastown.
If you're visiting with kids, they'll be hugely impressed by the 553 foot tall Top of Vancouver revolving restaurant. Other family-friendly attractions include Vancouver Aquarium, Columbia Springs environmental Education Centre and the Pomeroy Living History Farm. To ensure a great night's sleep for everyone, take the family on a frisky stroll along Vancouver's famous seawall walk alongside Stanley Park. At 28 kilometres in length, it's said to be one of the longest in the world.
