Wellington has been called the world's 'coolest little capital'. It steers New Zealand from the extraordinary Beehive parliamentary buildings and makes waves throughout the world with every sort of creativity. As a visitor you can explore the art-laden streets, discover a booming restaurant and craft beer scene, and add to your knowledge through remarkable museum experiences. You can also find yourself in wild places - forest and coastal beauty spots that are an easy bus ride from the city.

Things to do in Wellington

As with most cities, the centre is where much of the action happens. For Wellington that's Cuba Street - a colourful mishmash of eateries, bars, buskers, intriguing shops and arty locals. Travel out from there in any direction and you'll find an inspiring range of activities and things to see. The CBD is loosely divided into quarters and each has a clear personality.

Because it's situated on a harbour and bounded by forested hills, Wellington promises great scenery at every turn. Make sure you take a stroll around Oriental Bay on a fine day - too good! The cable car ride up to the Wellington Botanic Garden is another must.

As the home of New Zealand's thriving film production and special effects sector, this city attracts people with talent and curiosity. You can witness their creativity at Peter Jackson's world famous Weta Workshop and Te Papa, a national museum that presents treasured things in surprising ways. At night, catch a performance at BATS Theatre, the birthplace of many Kiwi acting careers.

Just out of the city there are wild places to discover, such as the bird sanctuary Zealandia and the seal colony at Red Rocks. Or scoot over to Makara Beach and walk the loop track, which includes an ancient Ngāti Ira pā site. For a side trip with views that never stop, jump onto the inter-island ferry and cruise over Cook Strait to Picton. The scenery as you slide through Marlborough Sounds will wear out your vocabulary.
