Pay for your rental car with Airpoints Dollars™

Exclusively available when booking Avis and Budget car rental through Air New Zealand. These bookings (also known as "Airpoints Redemptions" or "Airpoints Reward" bookings) are available for New Zealand-based Airpoints members to book online for locations across New Zealand and around the globe.

Airpoints members residing outside of New Zealand will have to make a manual booking with our contact centre. Bookings can only be made for car rental in New Zealand. 

Please note that your Airpoints Dollars balance must cover the cost of the booking in full. If you do not have sufficient Airpoints Dollars to cover the total cost the option to Pay with Airpoints Dollars will not display.

How to pay for your rental car with Airpoints Dollars

  1. IMPORTANT: To have the option to Pay with Airpoints Dollars you must first sign in to your online account with your Airpoints membership details.
  2. On the rental car booking website confirm that you are signed-in by sighting your name and Airpoints number in the upper right corner.
  3. Perform your search and select your vehicle. Proceed to select any optional equipment/services and protections/coverages that you require.
  4. IMPORTANT: On "Step 4", the "Renter Information" page you must select the Pay with Airpoints Dollars checkbox. Your balance and the amount that will be deducted from your account will be displayed. Select the "Book" button at the bottom of this page to complete the transaction. If this checkbox does not appear verify that your Airpoints Dollars balance is sufficient to cover the entire transaction. Please note that some international locations that are non-Airport may not support transactions paid for with Airpoints Dollars.

Has my booking been paid for with Airpoints Dollars?

On your booking confirmation email, verify that the amount will be depicted with an Airpoints Glyph 'A' and not local currency. If the transaction is stated as NZD (or other local currency depending on the country of the rental) the booking has not been paid for with Airpoints Dollars.

Adding Equipment/Services and Protections/Coverages

After selecting your vehicle, you will be provided with the opportunity to add any optional equipment/services and protections/coverages that you would like. This includes:

  • Additional driver
  • Bike rack
  • GPS Navigation
  • Child Safety Seats
  • Excess Reduction
  • Collision Damage Waiver (where applicable)

Please note that your Airpoints balance will need to cover the entire cost. If you wish to pay for these items by cash, they can be purchased directly at the counter when you collect your vehicle.

International (offshore) Airpoints members

Members residing outside of New Zealand will need to make Airpoints redemption bookings through our contact centre. As this is a manual process all bookings will need to be made at least 5 business days prior to travel. Air New Zealand recommends booking as far in advance as possible in order to ensure a smooth process.

Please note that bookings paid for with Airpoints Dollars are not entitled to Airpoints Dollars earn. All Airpoints Dollars payment must be made at the time of booking, including "Pay Later" rates as Airpoints Dollars payment at the counter is not possible.
