Save on rental cars

When you book Avis or Budget through Air New Zealand, some destinations will give you the choice to select either a Pay Later or a Pay Now rate.

• Pay Later rate: Free cancellation. You can cancel online and no fees will apply.
• Pay Now rate: Cancellation fees apply. You'll need to cancel online before pickup time. Otherwise, full pre-paid amount will be forfeited for "no-show" situation.

All rentals are subject to an insurance excess; optional coverage is available locally to reduce this.

When renting from other locations you will be advised of any mileage restrictions under the "Mileage" section of the Reservation Details on both Step 3 and Step 4 of the booking process. In addition, your booking confirmation email will also contain any information regarding this.

Put your mind at ease: our rates always include standard insurance - sometimes other websites don't - and we always display the full rate upfront (including all taxes). We also make it easy to add optional Excess Reduction and other cover for additional peace of mind.

In the event of a delay where the flight arrives late our car rental partners are equipped to understand which flights are delayed and the revised arrival time. Always ensure that you include your flight number with your booking. If the date(s) of your flight change, or you have a new flight number you can add or amend this information (you'll need your Booking Confirmation Number). 

If you need to extend your car rental and you have not yet collected the vehicle:

• Pay Now: Cancel your original booking and make a new one. Cancellation/change fees apply. * This applies to "Pay Now" rates paid for with Airpoints Dollars.
• Pay Later:  If you will be paying with credit card you can modify your original booking. If you have paid with Airpoints Dollars you will need to cancel your original booking and make a new one. No cancellation/change fees apply.

If you need to extend when you are mid-rental:

• Contact the branch you have rented from. 
  • If you have paid with Airpoints Dollars you will need to pay by credit card for the additional days of rental. 
  • Additional days will earn 3 Airpoints Dollars per rental day.

Note that when you modify or extend a booking current rental rates will apply. This rate may differ from the rate at which you booked.

If your flight has been delayed, changed, cancelled or otherwise disrupted resulting in a cancellation fee or No Show fee being applied, Avis/Budget will refund this fee to you. Please contact us, select "Ask a Question", "Delayed, disrupted or rescheduled flight" to request this refund.

If you need to change the dates/times or other details of your Pay Now booking you will need to cancel and re-book.

Yes, a standard hold of $200 will be placed on your card to cover any incidental charges. This hold will be removed within a week of returning your vehicle if no additional charges are incurred. This is standard practice across the car rental industry.
