Frequent Flyer Status Assistance

We introduced the Frequent Flyer Status Assistance for our Airpoints™ Elite, Gold and Silver on 1 February 2023. This assistance was provided as a Status Points Boost or Status Points Bonus to all members who qualified through the year during the period 1 February 2023 – 31 January 2024.

This has now finished. You can find more about the Airpoints programme tier requirements.

Details on this now closed initiative is displayed below.

31 January 2024

Since early 2020, Airpoints™ introduced three Tier Status Extensions^ in order to protect our Airpoints Elite, Gold and Silver members from downgrading due to travel restrictions caused by COVID-19. In July 2022, with the New Zealand international border re-opened for travel, flying has gradually returned with more frequency.

While we are no longer offering Tier Status Extensions, with the world now reopening to travel we wanted to provide some final assistance to help our current Elite, Gold and Silver members who may have been impacted by the travel restrictions in the first half of 2022.

How are we supporting our members as travel restarts?

From 1 February 2023 to 31 January 2024, as our members undergo their own annual review, we will be providing a Status Points top up to our members of up to 20% of the required Status Points to retain their tier. To retain their tier our members will need to earn, at a minimum, the initial 80% of Status Points required through their own earnings.

During the same period we would also like to recognise those members who have continued to earn the required number of Status Points to retain their own tier or upgrade a tier with a Status Points bonus.

Status Points top up

From 1 February 2023 to 31 January 2024, as our members undergo their own annual review, we will be providing a one-off top-up to members' Airpoints accounts if their Status Points balance is below the minimum required number of Status Points to retain their tier on their review date. These are automatically applied by our system on the member's review date. This will be up to a maximum amount of 20% of the required Status Points to retain their tier. To retain their tier, our members will need to earn, at a minimum, the initial 80% required through their own earnings. The Status Points top up is not displayed in a member's account. We will apply these extra Air New Zealand Status Points on their account review date as follows.

Silver and Gold members:

Silver and Gold members who still hold a Tier Status Extension in their account do not require extra Air New Zealand Status Points and will use the Tier Status Extension to retain their current status.

Members who do not have a Tier Status Extension will have extra Air New Zealand Status Points, to a maximum set rate, added to their account to help retain their tier. These are automatically added by our system on the review date. If the number of qualifying Status Points in the member's account is still below the minimum requirement to retain their status the account will move down to the next tier.

Elite members:

We will apply extra Air New Zealand Status Points, to a maximum set rate to help retain Elite members. These are automatically added by our system on their review date. If the number of qualifying Status Points in the member's account is still below the minimum requirement to retain Elite status, the account will move down to Airpoints Gold.

In the case where an Elite member is holding an Elite Banked Year this will be used to retain Elite status for a further year.

How many Status Points top ups will we provide?

The Status Points will be applied as Air New Zealand earned Status Points and will be applied up to a maximum amount of 20% of the Status Points which are required by our Airpoints members to retain their tier status.

If a member does not require all of the extra Status Points to retain their tier, the balance will not be credited to the member's account. Any Status Points which are credited as part of a Status Points top up will not count towards a tier upgrade.

How are we recognising members who retain their membership or upgrade their status?

We know that although travel has been challenging, a number of our members have still earned enough of their own Status Points to retain their status or even upgrade a tier, and we certainly appreciate the support.

From 1 February 2023 – 31 January 2024, we are introducing a one-off Status Points bonus for these members. This bonus will apply to members who either retain their status or upgrade a tier with their own Status Points earnings during this period, without the use of a Tier Status Extension, Elite Banked Year or Status Points top up.

Members who retain their Silver, Gold or Elite Status

If a member earns enough Status Points to retain their status on their review date within the above period, (without the use of a Tier Status Extension, Elite Banked Year or Status Points top up) we will credit a Status Points bonus. This bonus will be credited as Air New Zealand Status Points into the member's account at the start of the next membership year (after their review date).

Members who upgrade a tier from Silver or Gold Status

Who is eligible for the extra Status Points top up or Status Points bonus?

It will be made available to eligible members who hold Airpoints Elite, Gold or Silver status* on 1 February 2023 and who are scheduled for their annual Airpoints account review between 1 February 2023 and 31 January 2024.

During that period eligible members may only receive one Status Points assistance, either the Status Points top up or Status Points bonus.

Gold or Silver members who still hold a Tier Status Extension and do not earn enough Status Points to retain their tier at their review date will not receive the Status Points top up as the Tier Status Extensions will be used to retain their membership status.

There will be some members who may not receive either Status Points assistance. These are members who retain their status through the use of a Tier Status Extension or Elite Banked Year and do not upgrade a tier.
